Film Screening × Live Jingju |
Thursday, July 23, 2026, 7:15PM | TIFF Lightbox Cinema 3, 350 King St W, Toronto
Overview
On July 23, 2026, Echoes From China partnered with AMOMENTBOOKS to bring live Jingju into the Toronto TIFF Special Screening of Farewell My Concubine. After earlier sold-out Toronto screenings, the 33rd Anniversary Tour arrived at TIFF Lightbox with a rare "film × live opera" format: a film about Jingju performers, preceded by the living art form itself.
The Sword Dance
The "Sword Dance of Consort Yu" is the crowning scene of the Jingju Farewell My Concubine, a classic of the Mei Lanfang repertoire: surrounded at Gaixia on the eve of defeat, Consort Yu performs one final sword dance for her king — a farewell rendered entirely through movement, blade, and bearing. It is also the scene that defines Cheng Dieyi in the film, the role within the role around which the entire story turns.
At TIFF Lightbox, young Jingju artists of Echoes From China brought this scene off the screen and into the room. Under the cinema lights, the audience watched the sword dance performed live — the poised footwork, the circling blade, the stylized grace of the dan role — moments before watching Leslie Cheung embody the same scene in 4K. Few in the audience had ever seen Jingju performed in person; fewer still had seen it in a cinema, framed against the very film it inhabits. When the performance ended and the screen lit up, the evening completed its design: Consort Yu, twice in one night — once in the flesh, once in light.
Why This Matters |
For Echoes From China, this collaboration marks a step the Society has been working toward: carrying Chinese traditional performing arts beyond community stages and into Canada's major cultural venues. Performing at TIFF Lightbox, alongside the only Chinese-language film ever to win the Palme d'Or, placed Jingju in front of an audience it rarely reaches — and proved that when film and live tradition meet, both are seen more clearly.
